Alpha lipoic Acid is used in many supplements to help with weight
loss, diabetic pain, blood sugar, liver health, and other such
complications. It works as an antioxidant that sort of rids the body
of anything that might be causing it harm. This could be outside
pollutants, smoke, pollution and other such things. It can also be
internal objects such as sugars and food that might not be
absorbed. The main reason that alpha lipoic acid works is because it
allows the body to absorb sugar or glucose a lot faster and more
efficient then if it was to be absorbed on its own.
There are not many side effect reported from the use of alpha
lipoic acid but there is one condition on the appearance of side
effects and that is the dosage amount. Alpha lipoic Acid dosage
amounts plays a key factor in side effects being present in those that
take it. Those that took smaller dosages such as 5 mg reported having
no problems or a slight headache. Those that were taking very high
dosages reported having a lot more complications. These complications
ranged from minor such as headaches, stomach aches, muscle cramps,
diarrhea, and lower blood sugar. All the way to the sever side effects
such as insulin resistance. This is when the body can no longer
produce insulin on its own and instead must turn to alternative
insulin such as injections in order to produce this life sustaining
substance. It is really rare to be taking such high dosages but if one
is considering taking such substances then it is best to make sure
that the dosage is lower.
If one is a diabetic it might not effect the blood sugar levels of
a diabetic on the lower dosage scale but it is best to monitor the
blood levels often especially when first starting out on an alpha
lipoic acid supplement. This will allow you to see what the supplement
is doing to the body and you can determine any side effects that might
be present. If there is any concern about taking this supplement
consult a health care provider as they can best tailor your needs to
what is best for your body.
